Concept

​

tranquil. is designed exclusively for Ryerson student. The wellness center focuses on spiritual healing and nutrition, student safety and sustainable design. The design is inspired by trees which represent life and growth, as students need to be well physically and emotionally. The design integrates with form and lighting to incorporate biophilic aspects throughout the space. Together with human-centered design, tranquil. will be the perfect destination for students to find their inner peace and nourish their physical health.

The Arrival

​

tranquil. proposed a site plan which includes the transformation of the existing service lane and parking space at the west and north side of the building into student activity yard. The yard will hold summer events such as summer markets and student parties. The side of the building will be used to project movies for movie nights. The walkway will have the same tiles as Ryerson campus's tiles for wayfinding, and there will be a wayfinding lane for the visually impaired. The front façade is inspired by tree roots, body and branches.

Programming

​

tranquil. focuses on spiritual healing, thus the space will provide natural wellbeing areas such as a bird sanctuary, a koi pond and several green walls. The center also focuses on student's health, therefore the wellness center will integrate with nutrition services such as a nutrition bar and counseling.

3rd Floor - Nutrition and Socialization

​

The 3rd floor of the center will focus on nutrition and socialization. The rescued bird sanctuary, which will be taken care of by Toronto Humane Society, will provide soothing bird songs while students socialize and eat in the hanging nest chairs. There will be a waterfall which utilizes grey water, next to a soothing and relaxing koi pond. The walls on each side of the koi pond will be used to projects Ryerson events and documentaries about nature.

Human-centered Design

​

tranquil. will provided human factored design that offers many options for students. The ergonomic seating, located in the touchdown lobby, has one side with sitting options, and the other side with standing options in different heights, allowing wheelchair accessibility. The bar and kitchen counters also provide a variety of heights for comfortability.

4th Floor - Meditation and Wellbeing

​

The 4th floor of the center focuses on finding inner peace and enjoying the natural scenes. The design provides several meditation nests for semi-private meditation. Students can access the meditation guide audios on tranquil. app, or relax and connect with their spiritual sides while listening to the birds singing and water falling. The ceiling skylight is custom made to create an unique effect that resemble the light and shadows underneath the tree branches.

Reading Station

​

Students are encourage to take a break from social medias and read. Reading not only helps students gain more knowledge but also helps them finding their inner peace. Students will have access to provided books on the shelves or audio books from the phone apps.
